Finding Our Ground: Week 6 - Grounding in a higher power

Week 6 - Grounding in a higher power

In our sixth session we will discuss the importance of finding something BIG in which you can put your trust. Whether it’s the Universe, Love, God, or Liberation, naming our higher power and staying grounded in it can give us the strength we need to keep going in an uncertain future.

Climate work can take a large psychological and emotional toll on organizers. It can be hard to find time to address the emotional weight of this work, but leaving it unaddressed can quickly lead to burnout. In this drop-in series, join facilitator Gabrielle Gelderman (she/her) and a small circle of your climate organizing peers to lift some of the emotional burdens of this work. Using group sharing, personal reflection, and guided meditation practices, this series asks the question: “how can we use grounding practices as a way to cope with despair and stay connected to ourselves, each other, and our shared purpose, in order to experience and work towards transformative change?”

This will be a six week, drop-in, free online series facilitated by Gabrielle Gelderman (she/her), community organizer and chaplain. Gabrielle is a third-generation settler on amiskwaciwâskahikan, Treaty 6 territory (Edmonton, Alberta). She is a student of contemplative and somatic healing traditions and provides spiritual care to people in both hospital and social movement settings.

This series will take place Tuesdays from 4:30-6:30pm PST/7:30-9:30pm EST starting March 21st and ending on April 25th.

Please fill out this Google form if you are interested in attending one or more of these sessions!

Finding Our Ground: Week 4 - Grounding with the earth

Week 4 - Grounding with the earth

In our fourth session we will explore different ways we can experience, in a tangible way, our own embeddedness in the watersheds and ecosystems that sustain us. The land loves us and holds us unconditionally! We will talk about what it means to receive this love, while also acknowledging the way colonial violence informs our relationship with land and our responsibility to her.

Finding Our Ground: Week 3 - Grounding in friendships

Week 3 - Grounding in friendships

In our third session we will talk about the important role that our friendships play in the search for healing and liberation. Together, we will learn some techniques for deepening the intimacy and vulnerability in our close personal relationships and discuss how communal practices of care can ground us in uncertain times.

Finding Our Ground: Week 2 - Grounding in our bodies

Week 2 - Grounding in our bodies

In our second session we will discuss embodiment: why it’s so critical in our work for liberation and why it can feel so challenging to anchor ourselves in our physical being. Then, using some gentle guided body practices, we will learn how to embrace our bodies as a resource and refuge instead of something to control, ignore or avoid.

Coming Home to Yourself: Practicing Collective Grief, Joy & Liberation While the World Unravels

Coming Home to Yourself: Practicing Collective Grief, Joy & Liberation While the World Unravels

With wildfires, floods, extreme heat and the ongoing impacts of Covid19 continuing to rise, it can sometimes feel like the world as we know it is unravelling. How do we practice belonging in the midst of uncertainty? How can practices of collective mourning, joy, and belonging help to keep us grounded while the world unravels?

If these are questions that feel resonant to you, please consider joining us as we explore them through gently guided group practices, and personal reflective time at this upcoming retreat.Coming Home to Yourself is a 2-day retreat at a remote lakeside cabin on Treaty 6 land close to the town of Smoky Lake (2 hr drive from Edmonton, AB). It will be an opportunity to spend time in both personal and collective reflection––taking part in guided meditation, group discussion, somatic practices, and land-based exercises.

Participants will be invited to slow down and reconnect with whatever is currently alive in them and in their experience. This could be grief around the state of the world or about a personal loss; it could be a sense of longing to connect more deeply with one's ancestors or one's body; or, it could be a pressing question about one's life and life choices.
Whatever it is, participants will be met exactly where they are, and will find in this retreat a space to explore whatever is coming up for them while feeling connected and supported. Together we will ask, and practice, what it means to belong––to ourselves, to each other, and to the land around us.
